With a reputation for reliability, innovation, and integrity, we are seeking a dynamic, commercially minded Financial Controller to join our leadership team, with a defined path to Finance Director level.
Role Overview
Supporting the Finance Director you will take ownership of the finance function ensuring robust financial management, compliance, and strategic support to the business. This hands-on role combines technical finance, commercial insight, and operational collaboration, making it ideal for a proactive finance professional seeking progression to FD level.
Key Responsibilites
Finance
- Oversee all aspects of the accounting and administration functions including future systems development.
- Provide financial support and query resolution for the finance team.
- Prepare accurate and timely monthly management accounts and performance reports.
- Oversee capital expenditure (Capex) and ensure proper accounting treatment.
- Manage treasury functions, including cash flow forecasting and optimisation.
- Complete pension scheme returns and maintain compliance with relevant regulations.
- Prepare and submit VAT returns for two companies.
- Coordinate year-end processes and prepare statutory accounts for two companies in conjunction with external auditors.
Commercial & Legal
- Maintain and develop senior relationships with police clients, including participation in contract review meetings and escalation of customer issues (in conjunction with the Operations Director).
- Support large or unusual customer quotations and provide financial input into tenders and contract negotiations.
- Oversee contract management and ensure commercial terms are effectively controlled and delivered.
- Manage and develop key business systems (including Sage Accounts, WorldPay, ISO9001, and Cyberassure).
- Act as IT liaison, working with the Operations Director and Response Manager on systems development and integration projects.
- Handle legal matters and complaints as required.
- Support HR functions, including payroll review and compliance, where applicable.
- Provide financial and strategic input at Board and shareholder meetings, including management reporting and business insights.
- Contribute to business planning and strategic initiatives in partnership with the Operations Director.
Skills & Experience Required
- Qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA) or equivalent experience.
- Proven experience in a Financial Controller, Finance Manager, or similar role within an SME or multi-entity environment. Equally this would be an excellent move for a commercially focussed accountant moving from practice
- Strong understanding of management and statutory accounting principles.
- Commercially astute with experience in contracts, tenders, and client relationships an advantage
- Hands-on and detail-oriented, comfortable working in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, able to liaise confidently with all levels of the organisation.
- Experience using Sage Accounts (or similar) and knowledge of other financial systems or ISO frameworks (desirable).
